A Rolling Stone publicou uma lista com os 250 melhores álbuns do século 21 até agora. Sendo assim, o ranking contemplou lançamentos de diferentes gêneros musicais ocorridos entre 2001 e 2024.
Segundo a revista, 38 profissionais contribuíram com a seleção. Na introdução, o veículo destacou que a prioridade esteve em “discos que trouxessem algo importante ou interessante” num contexto geral:
“Ao compilar nossa lista dos 250 melhores álbuns do último quarto de século, buscamos representar o máximo possível da amplitude dessa história. Assim, ao nos depararmos com a escolha entre incluir múltiplos álbuns de um mesmo artista ou abrir espaço para um disco que trouxesse algo importante ou interessante para a lista, quase sempre optamos pela segunda alternativa. Ainda assim, esta é uma lista de álbuns, não de artistas, e certos nomes de peso simplesmente lançaram LPs incríveis demais para serem ignorados.”
Nomes ligados ao rock e metal apareceram no ranking, como Deftones, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Radiohead, Queens of the Stone Age, System of a Down, Green Day, Converge e Mastodon. Artistas “mais novos” orientados ao estilo, incluindo Pierce the Veil, Turnstile, Fall Out Boy e Paramore, também conseguiram espaço.
Beyoncé garantiu o primeiro lugar com “Lemonade”, seu sexto trabalho de estúdio, disponibilizado em abril de 2016. Acompanhado de uma produção visual, o álbum explora elementos do pop, reggae, blues e hip hop em sua sonoridade, abordando temas como traição, empoderamento feminino, racismo e violência policial.
A respeito da escolha, o jornalista Mankaprr Conteh pontuou:
“‘Lemonade’ sempre foi mais do que apenas um álbum. É um filme musical tão rico, deslumbrante e impactante quanto um drama clássico, um mosaico de dores geracionais, uma celebração de legado e um mapa desenhado à mão que traça os cruzamentos das vidas interpessoais e políticas de muitas mulheres negras. Esse último aspecto ficou em evidência quando a música ‘Freedom’ virou o tema da campanha presidencial de Kamala Harris em 2024 […]. Resumindo, ‘Lemonade’ consolidou o status de Beyoncé entre as maiores artistas de todos os tempos.”
